There are direct buses from Mendoza to Tucumán (some 13 to 14 hours travel on Andesmar, on VERY COMFORTABLE buses).   This trip costs 80 pesos in coach class, 85 pesos in semi bed, 100 pesos in bed service and 125 pesos (42 dollars)  in the Ejecutive Premium Bed Service, seats that lean back completely horizontal and hot dinner "a la carte" (your choice of chicken, meat or vegetables, wine, whisky and champagne, DVD and MP3).  These buses go through the cities of La Rioja and Catamarca.   It you stay at La Rioja, you might be able to visit the Talampaya National Park (patrimony of humanity) that is some 2 hours away from the city.   Being 3 travellers, you should be able to get a tour set up, or even go in a taxi.  If you do not want to spend a lot of money, there are regular buses from La Rioja to the entrance of the National Park, but don't get off there, because you will have to walk 7 miles to the place from where the tours leave.   Continue to Panecillo, and there you will find local tours to the national park.
