TRAVELLING THROUGH LATIN AMERICA
27.09.05 a las 14:33:31

THE ANGEL FALLS (VENEZUELA)

To see the beautiful photos that illustrate this note, please go to:

http://forums.about.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?nav=messages&tsn=1&tid=540&webtag=ab-go...

Some months ago I posted a forum entitled PLACES WORTWHILE VISITING IN ARGENTINA, since I believe that at this time Argentina offers by far the very best deal for foreign tourists.

However, Latin America and the Caribbean have nearly 40 countries in total, and with the exception of a couple of them, which I will not mention, all have incredible beauties and challenges for the tourist.

During nine years I was the Latin America Field Representative of a civil association of the USA, travelling 200 days a year out of Argentina and supervising 34 countries including Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean.   You may imagine that during 1800 days of travel I visited many places (I missed some of them, however, like Punta Cana in Dominican Republic. being only 20 miles away, but with a lot of work to do), but this gives me an experience and knowledge of the whole area that I would like to share with you.

Venezuela is an expensive country just now, a 3-star hotel that used to cost only ten US Dollars per night fifteen years ago, now is costing 130 US Dollars per night.   But if money is not a problem, I am sure you will enjoy this one:

http://www.aerialfocus.com/angelfalls.html

http://www.mipunto.com/temas/3er_trimestre03/canaima.html

I had the privilege of overflying the Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world, nearly 1000 meters or 3300 feet high, on a one-day tour from Canaima, another place that is wortwhile visiting..   There is an expedition by land from Canaima that takes 4 days navigating the rivers of the area, but I did not have time to go on that one.

Venezuela is a tropical country on the Caribbean and has many beautiful places to see: The Andes, the coastal foothills (mountains about 3000 feet tall covered by tropical forests falling into the sea...with clear water, white sand and palm trees by the seaside)  I will mention Mérida in the Andes, Playa Colorada on the sea between Puerto La Cruz and Cumaná, and Colonia Tovar, a Swiss settlement in the mountains.   But we will talk about these places later on in this forum.

Please feel free to share the beauties you have visited in Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean in this forum, so that all of us may enjoy them.

Regards from Mar del Plata, Argentina.

USHUAIA, ARGENTINA: A REAL PARADISE
Respuesta #1 - 28.09.05 a las 12:07:09

USHUAIA, THE SOUTHERNMOST CITY OF THE WORLD

To see the photos that this note refers to, please go to:

http://forums.about.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?nav=display&tsn=2&tid=540&webtag=ab-gos...

PHOTO: CITY OF USHUAIA

The larger photos pasted here have been copied from the official site of the Municipality of Ushuaia, where you will find many other beautiful photos:  http://www.ushuaia.gov.ar/fotos/HTML_Index/index.html

PHOTO: CORMORANS

PHOTO: CERRO ALVEAR

I have visited Ushuaia only twice in my lifetime, and I enjoyed every day of both visits in a very special way.   A Mexican friend who visited Ushuaia last year says that the scenery seems taken from a fairy tale, and I agree completely with him.

PHOTO: CERRO CASTROR SKI RESORT

The five following photos have been copied from www.argentinaturistica.com, an excellent site for tourist information on Argentina, that you will probably want to visit.

Ushuaia is expensive by local parameters, but not by international standards.   Hotels apply one rate to nationals and another higher rate to foreigners.   This only happens in Ushuaia and El Calafate and to some extent at Puerto Madryn.  Don´t ask me why, but Bariloche, Iguazú, Salta, Córdoba and Mar del Plata are far cheaper...   In any case, you also have the option of Hostelling International if you wish to go there, and their rates are low.

http://www.hostelling-aaaj.org.ar/

Never travel without hotel reservations to Ushuaia or Calafate.  They have a very high demmand and you might have to sleep on the street...   You might want to use the services of www.welcomeargentina.com, that also has an English page, to make hotel reservations by E-mail without the need of using the services of a Travel Agent.

Ushuaia requires at least 3 or 4 days to visit the most important spots: the navigation of the Beagle channel (half a day), the Martial Glacier (a 4 to 5 mile walk, or a half day tour), the ski center (if you go in winter) and the Tierra del Fuego National Park and Lapataia (very nice).   Then you have the Tren del Fin del Mundo (Train of the End of the World) and some other attractions.   But these are the most important ones.

Of course, if you are fond of ski and of trekking, you will have to spend far more time and you will enjoy every minute you spend.

Flights from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia are expensive, and I have been told that the flights to Río Gallegos (ten hours away by bus from Ushuaia) cost half the price.   You can also do the complete trip by bus, if you want, but it is too long for my taste, unless if you make a stopover at Puerto Madryn, to see the penguins and whales, which certainly you will enjoy.   By the way, Río Gallegos is only 5 hours away from Calafate, the South American Alaska with its incredible glaciers and icebergs...  The bus from Rio Gallegos to Ushuaia goes through Chile, and you could have to comply with the immigration requirements of both Chile and Argentina.

www.glaciar.com

There are also direct flights from Ushuaia to El Calafate.

If you are fond of fishing, Rio Grande is the place to go, it boasts world records in sea trout of up to 40 pounds... and it is some 3 to 4 hours away from Ushuaia by bus.

http://www.safariexperts.com/country_argentina_rio_grande.asp

(By the way, the photo on the top of this page is of the Iguazú falls, in Northeastern Argentina, some 2500 miles away...)

And if you don´t mind taking an expensive cruise, the Mare Australis will offer you and incredible 4 or 5 day tour to Punta Arenas for a cost of 490 to 2200 US Dollars, depending on the season and the type of cabin you wish.

http://www.australis.com/

Let the photos speak for themselves.   The photos of Ushuaia I have pasted here have all been copied from www.argentinaturistica.com, a very complete page on Argentina that also has an English version (just click on the British flag).

You should not miss it.  And slightly to the north, an unforgetable experience for fishing large brown trout in the Río Grande.

Here are some views of this beautiful spot of Argentina.

PUNTA DEL ESTE, URUGUAY

PUNTA DEL ESTE, URUGUAY, THE MEETING PLACE OF LATIN AMERICAN PRESIDENTS

To see the photos pasted in this article, please go to:

http://forums.about.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?nav=display&tsn=2&tid=5 40&webtag=ab-gosoamerica

Presidents always look for the most beautiful places to meet, and they go often to Punta del Este to hold their meetings.

This is not by chance: Punta del Este has a beautiful combination of beaches, forests and many other attractions.   Just have a glance at these photos, and you will understand what I am talking about.

The above photos have been copied from

http://www.visit-uruguay.com/photogallery.htm, that is an excellent place to look for information on Uruguay.

Montevideo is also a very nice city, and has some nice beaches at Pocitos and Carrasco, and all the way from Montevideo to Punta del Este (an hour and a half by bus) you will find very nice places, including Carrasco, Atlántida, Pinamar, Piriápolis and Punta Ballena.

Have a look at the photos, and enjoy your next trip to Uruguay, which is not as expensive as it used to be:

SACSAYHUAMAN, A MASTERPIECE OF THE INCA EMPIRE
Respuesta #3 - 01.10.05 a las 21:11:27

SACSAYHUAMAN (CUSCO, PERU), AN INCREDIBLE FORTRESS CONSTRUCTED BY THE INCAS

To see the photos copied in this note, please go to:

http://groups.msn.com/Adictosaviajar/general.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_...

and scroll down to the fourth article.

Photo copied from:

http://www.jqjacobs.net/andes/images/saxsay_1.jpg

where you will find many other nice photos.

Within the tourist destinations of Perú, Cusco is one of the most known, because it is a beautiful colonial city, and because it is the door to Machu Pichu, to which we will refer in a future posting.

Less known, but far more impressive, is the Sacsayhuaman fortress, only 2 miles away from the center of city of Cusco.  It is a triple defensive line in zigzag constructed with rocks weighing some 500 tones each (20 ft x 30 ft x 20 ft) welded to each other when cement did not exist and placed one on top of another (something that would be impossible even with today´s technology, but that the Incas were able to do).  Something as mysterious as the mohairs in Easter Island (Chile).

Here is a slide show and some more photos:

http://www.wordtravels.com/photos/country/Peru/PE/11

Photos copied from http://www.culturefocus.com/peru.htm

that has a very interesting description in English of this place.

Enjoy it.

PUCON, CHILE: A BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO VISIT
Respuesta #4 - 13.10.05 a las 22:03:50

PUCÓN (CHILE), A VERY NICE PLACE IN THE ANDES

To see the photos that illustrate this note, please go to:

http://groups.msn.com/Adictosaviajar/general.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_...

Photos copied from this page, that has excellent information on all Chile: http://www.paseosenchile.cl/English/destinos/pucon/fotos.asp

It is a small village relatively near Santiago (two hours by bus from Temuco) and a very pleasant place to visit.   Fishing is not as good as further South, but it has many attractions in the area.   These are some of them:

You can be sunbathing at the lake, and the next day be in the snow if you climb the Villarica volcano.   The Huerquehue National Park is very near.   Hotels in Pucon are relatively expensive compared with those in the nearby town of Villarica, but Pucon is a far nicer place where to stay.   You can also take fishing or rafting expeditions down the rivers in the area.

http://www.interpatagonia.com/pucon/index.html

http://www.interpatagonia.com/paseos/volcanvillarrica/index_i.html?origen=montan...

http://www.interpatagonia.com/paseos/paseoenbici_puc/index.html?origen=mtb

And from there Southwards, EVERYTHING is beautiful.  If you spend at least a couple of weeks visiting all the area down to Puerto Mont, and from there down to Quellón, you will not regret it.

Have a nice day.

EL CALAFATE (ARGENTINA), THE SOUTH AMERICAN ALASKA

EL CALAFATE (ARGENTINA), THE SOUTH AMERICAN ALASKA

To see the beautiful photos that illustrate this note, please go to:

http://groups.msn.com/Adictosaviajar/general.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_...

PHOTO: Perito Moreno Glacier.   The icebergs you see are large pieces of ice that fall off from the glacier.   I have filmed 50 feet chunks falling off; it is a thrilling experience.  First you hear a very strong noise like an explosion, when you do, point your camera or camcorder in the direction from where you heard the noise, and do not zoom in until you see the ice falling off the glacier; you may obtain unforgetable movies or photos...

The Perito Moreno Glacier is 30 miles long and about 200 feet high, but it is not the only beauty in this area.   There are more than ten other glaciers that are wortwhile visiting, at a fraction of the cost you would spend to see similar sceneries in other parts of the world.

PHOTO: Partial view of the glacier.

El Calafate is expensive by Argentine standards, but not in US Dollars.   A room with private bathroom at the Albergue y Hostal del Glaciar should be costing some 30 US Dollars, and a meal should be costing about 8 US Dollars.   I do not believe that you would find those prices in Torres del Paine (Chile), and far less in Alaska.

PHOTO: Tourists from all over the world come to see this incredible paradise...

The hostels in the area also have kitchen and cooking facilities if you want to prepare your own meals.  And if you only want a bed, they are affiliated to Hostelling International.

PHOTO: Icebergs in the lake.

Just have a look at these photos and tell me if you would not like to be there:

PHOTO

In the following links you will find beautiful photos of the glacier, especially in the second link:

http://www.interpatagonia.com/elcalafate/fotos_i.html

http://members.virtualtourist.com/vt/s/?m=6&c=0&s=Moreno&t=

http://www.interhabit.com/interhabit/indexnotes.asp?ID=193

And 150 miles to the North, the beautiful Fitz Roy Mount, a challenge for mountain climbers...

PHOTO

It is said to be the third most difficult mountain in the world to climb, but I have no way of knowing if this is true, or not...

PHOTO

In any case, the scenery is beautiful.  El Chaltén, where this mount is, is known as the trekking capital of Argentina...  The Rancho Grande hostel, affiliated to Hostelling International, has affordable rates.

All photos pasted in this note are mine and may be copied and used for any purpose.   Copying of photos in the internet links requires the authorization of the respective site.

LUXURY BUS SERVICES IN ARGENTINA
Respuesta #6 - 16.10.05 a las 12:28:03

LUXURY BUS SERVICES IN ARGENTINA

To see the photos of the featured services, please go to:
http://groups.msn.com/Adictosaviajar/general.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_...

Car rental is expensive in Argentina, and gasoline is also expensive.   Distances from one place to another are large, and it is better to relax and sleep on a latest generation bus than get tired driving.   A one thousand mile drive (from Buenos Aires to Bariloche) costs some 40 Dollars on a semi-bed service, and some 65 Dollars on a luxury service with seats that lean back completely flat, including hot dinner on board, wine, whisky and champagne, travel rug, movies, DVD, MP3 and more...

Different bus companies give this service different names.   These are some of them:

Plusmar has two types: Cama Suite (Suite Bus) and Plus Suite.  Empresa Argentina and Flehabus have the Suite Bus Here they are:

Via Bariloche (Buenos Aires to Bariloche and Buenos Aires to Iguazú) calls it Tutto Leto:

Crucero del Norte (Buenos Aires to Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Iguazú, Córdoba and Bariloche) calls it Cama Premium (It is the same as the services of Plusmar).
http://www.crucerodelnorte.com.ar/bienvenidos.htm

Expreso Singer calls it Cama Total

Andesmar calls it "Servicio de Primera Clase" (First Class Service) (the one in the middle).  This picture also gives you an idea of what the semi-cama service is like, if money is a primary consideration.

Sendas (Buenos Aires - Mendoza) calls it Salón Real" (Royal Saloon) http://www.e-mountain.com.ar/0BUS/Sendasserv.htm

Here are the web pages of the main bus companies:
www.crucerodelnorte.com.ar (Brazil, Paraguay, Chile, Iguazú and Bariloche)
www.viabariloche.com.ar (Iguazú and Bariloche)
www.plusmar.com.ar (Atlantic Coast)
www.andesmar.com.ar (Puerto Madryn, Río Gallegos (200 miles away from the glaciers) Mendoza, Iguazú, Bariloche and many other destinations from Buenos Aires, from Salta, from Córdoba, and from Mendoza).   Andesmar sells tickets with credit card over the internet.

There are also similar quality services in Chile (TurBus), and Brazil (Pluma).  Both these companies offer different types of service, so make sure that you are booking the most comfortable one.

I am sure that you will really enjoy travelling by bus in Argentina

Playa Colorada, between Puerto La Cruz y Cumaná, is in the Mochima National Park in Venezuela.

5000 ft. mountains with tropical vegetation fall down to the sea.  Below there are white sand beaches, crystaline water and palm trees.  A real oasis...

Would you not enjoy spending a week in this paradise?  It is a real pitty that everything is so expensive just now in Venezuela, but keep it in mind...  And if you can afford it, start packing your baggage...

PARADISE ON EARTH: PUERTO BLEST AND LAKE CISNE
Respuesta #8 - 25.11.05 a las 21:32:22

PUERTO BLEST (BARILOCHE) AND LAGO CISNE (ESQUEL): PARADISE ON EARTH

To see the photos that illustrate this note, please click here:

http://groups.msn.com/Adictosaviajar/general.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_...

PHOTO: The Puerto Blest hotel, in the middle of the forest and next to the lake and the Frías river.  It only has 14 rooms, so be sure to make your reservations...   It you book it from outside Argentina, it may be more expensive...

If you are fond of places where nature is practically untouched, don´t miss these two beautiful spots, one is near Bariloche, and the other one near Esquel, both in Argentina.

PHOTO: Puerto Blest in September

The only way to get to Puerto Blest is navigating the Nahuel Húapí Lake from Bariloche, on the Catamarans that go twice a day.   There is no road to get there.   Once you are there, you will only find a small hotel (14 rooms, in the middle of the forest and at the side of the lake), the National Park Ranger´s house, the Coast Guard Offices and the camping.

PHOTO: Puerto Blest in summer.   You can see the hotel hidden by the forest, on the other side of the lake...

You will not find internet, nor even a public phone.   In Summer the sunrise is at 5 am and the first catamaran arrives at 9 am with bunches of tourists on their way to Chile (100 to 300 passengers per trip), to continue navigating the lakes through Peulla and up to Puerto Montt in Chile.   This is a beautiful tour, but rather expensive (140 US Dollars), while the navigation to Puerto Blest, including the navigtion of Lake Frías, which is about half the traject, costs only some 18 US Dollars)

PHOTO: Los Cántaros upper waterfall

So if you stay at Puerto Blest and walk along the lake side early in the morning, it is almost certain that you will not cross a single human being during your 4-mile walk to the Los Cántaros cascade, one of the most beautiful ones I have ever seen (photos above and below).   You will see trout jumping out of the water, and probably some ducks having a good time.

PHOTO: Los Cántaros lower waterfall

You can also fish very nice trout in the Puerto Blest area.  I caught this brown trout there some 3 years ago.  You may have to go out trolling... and trolling is rather expensive in the area, some 30 Dollars the hour, more or less.

PHOTO

If you go to Esquel, don´t miss the Cisne Lake in the Los Alerces National Park.  Navigating the Futalaufquen Lake is beautiful (there is a nice hotel there, the Hostería Futalaufquen, though it could be expensive because it is probably a 4-star hotel).

PHOTO: Navigating the Arrayanes river, on the way to lakes Verde, Menéndez and Cisne.

PHOTO: Lake Cisne.   Nature in its primitive condition.   There is not even a lodge where to stay...

But if you take a tour, don´t miss the Verde, Menéndez and Cisne lakes.   The Cisne lake is also in a primitive environment.  To get there you have to go through a larch forest, where some trees are as much as 2,600 years old.

PHOTO: This tree belongs to the sequoia family, and is 2600 years old.   There are older ones in the intangible area of the National Park.

And a view of the roaring waters of the Cisne river is something you will remember for a long time (see next two photos)

PHOTO

PHOTO: A branch of the Cisne river downstream from the rapids.

Here are the links for Bariloche and Esquel.

http://www.argentinaturistica.com/2scbiresenia.htm (don't forget to click on "photos")

http://www.interpatagonia.com/bariloche/fotos_i.html

http://www.interpatagonia.com/esquel/fotos_i.html

http://www.argentinaturistica.com/2esqiresenia.htm (don't forget to click on "photos")

and in between is El Bolsón, another beautiful place worthwhile visiting:

http://www.argentinaturistica.com/2blsiresenia.htm

http://www.interpatagonia.com/elbolson/fotos_i.html

Price of hotels in the area is not expensive.   A room with private bathroom, cable TV and buffet breakfast at the hotel Quillén in Bariloche should be costing some 35 pesos (12 US Dollars) per day, single occupancy, except from January to March and in Winter, which is their high season..  In July and August, prices double due to the ski season.  At the Puerto Blest hotel, last Summer a room with dinner and breakfast was costing some 70 pesos (25 US Dollars) per person.   Prices are slightly higher in Esquel, where a single room in Residencial Ski costs some 18 Dollars, and especially so at lake Futalaufquen, where they are FAR more expensive.   The Executive Bus Service to Bariloche (seats the lean back completely flat, blanket, hot meals on board, including wine, whisky and champagne) costs some 60 Dollars from Buenos Aires to Bariloche, for a one thousand mile trip.   The service is excellent (check the Tutto Leto service on the www.viabariloche.com.ar page).

The same bus company has bus services that continue to El Bolsón and Esquel, although not with the same comfort and services.  In any case, we are talking of a 2 or 5-hour trip, from Bariloche to El Bolsón or to Esquel.

Start packing your cases now...
